Concentric Circles Reflection:

Concentric circles was a diagnostic assessment used to assess students understandings of some of they key concepts we would be examining during our unit.  Concentric circles breaks students up into groups and then presents them with a selection or pre-prepared cards that contain a statement. Students are also provided a piece of chart paper demarcated by three circles into 4 categories: Never, Sometimes, Most of the Time, and Always. Students must read the statement and then place it on the chart paper in relation to how frequently the statement is true.

The questions that we gave to students are as follows:

  1. I learn about people who look like me in my history class.
  2. Men and women receive equal pay for the same work.
  3. The dress code at my school is applied fairly towards all genders.
  4. I feel represented by elected officials.
  5. All women are represented in the women's rights movement.
  6. Women today have equal rights.
  7. It is safe to be a woman.
  8. The #MeToo Movement is successful.

After placing the statements, students then walk around to the other groups posters to see where they placed their statements. Students are asked to find patterns and differences between the way they placed their statements as compared to the way their peers placed their statements.  Once students have finished viewing the other posters, they are brought back for a group discussion based on the patterns they noticed.

This activity helped guide the unit because I was able to identify students familiarity with important concepts like women's rights. This activity also helped prime students for future discussion on topics like: rules vs. enforcement of rules and the #MeToo movement.
