This portfolio serves to document my learning and student-teaching experience throughout my year as part of Brown University’s Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program. Throughout the year, I had an opportunity teach and learn in three different classroom environments, each experience informing my practice in its own unique way. At the beginning of the program, under the guidance and mentorship of a former MAT graduate, I co-taught a class of rising fourth and fifth graders alongside a fellow MAT candidate. In the Fall, I student-taught a third grade classroom at Highlander Charter School. Most recently, this Spring I completed a full time student teaching placement in a fifth grade classroom at William D’Abate Elementary.

As part of the MAT program, we strive to learn, grow, and reflect upon how we are improving, reaching, and meeting each of our seven Brown Practice-Based Standards. These seven standards stand as guides to becoming better educators for ourselves and our students. Throughout my portfolio I provide examples of the various ways I attempted to meet each of these standards, whether it was successful or not, and what I have learned in doing so. These continue to be my reflective steps to growth and combating daily educational challenges.

This portfolio is broken down and structured in a way that portrays how I have worked towards achieving or have met each of the standards. For each standard, you will find the description of the specified standard, an overview in which I summarize key aspects of each standard with the literature that has helped me inform my teaching throughout the year, along with teaching references and examples which portray my continuous work to encompass all parts of the standard or the reflections which has allowed me to grow and learn more in approaching the standard.
