Reflection:

The lesson for this day was to introduce the concept of othering in the U.S., how it is used and what are its effects. The gallery walk was our first introduction to this concept. Before letting students participate in the gallery walk, my team teacher did a think aloud with the first source to show students how to use sentence frames when analyzing a text especially in regards to othering. Aside from the first source, we showed three other different examples of othering in the U.S. Along with each source, we provided context on the graphic organizer for students to get into the practice of reading captions to help analyze a source. The graphic organizer allowed for students to be able to reflect individually while participating in the gallery walk. It was important for students to be able to learn how to identify different examples of othering and question why the U.S. would do this individually. My team teacher and I would walk around and see how students are reflecting on each source. This helped us figure out which groups may need more clarification and/or facilitating skills once they work together to answers the questions on the back of the graphic organizer. The questions on the back help students be able to use the word "othering" multiple times before applying it in later activities. Having students do this helped them understand how othering is a structure that is used to uphold U.S. empire.
