“Framing plus Moment equals Story”, over and over I hear Mary Beth remind our class that the art of photography can be treated like a science. Her month long workshop provided students with a structure and framework within which to develop both their imaginations and their critical thinking skills. The ICS Third Grade’s Social Studies Unit “Documenting Cultural Communities: A Digital Photography Project” involved a multimedia investigation of the idea of culture. All students were given their own digital point and shoot camera in September and over the course of the following months they were assigned how and what to take photographs of. By then end of November Mary Beth had coached and critiqued and pulled beautiful photographs out of each one of them. What I learned during this process will inform my practice as an arts educator for the rest of my career.
