This (student copy posted above, original in link) is an example of an assignment I made for my period 3 class, which included some students who had trouble picking the main idea of a reading assignment. We modeled together in class how to use this before-during-after reading guide, including the magnet summaries for the during piece in which students jot down key words that are “attracted” to the center term, as in they would be picked up by it if it was a magnet, hence magnet words.  While I did not have an English Language Learners in my classes, this assignment could be useful with English Language Learners if used with appropriate level texts because it helps develop the pre-reading, during reading and after reading (summarizing) strategies in ways that are very natural for advanced readers.  I particularly liked these because they are not really abstract activities, good readers do all these things naturally, think about the topic before they read, pull out key words, and summarize, this is just making the activities explicit on paper so a teacher can verify that they are done. I show a sample here of student work that doesn't follow the assignment on magnet words and was a common problem that I corrected.
