To me, an important part of assessment is diagnostic, knowing where the students already are, for planning, but also because to have worthwhile assessment one needs a baseline. If my students had learned all about Daoism last year and I taught them nothing on it and they performed well on a test about it, that wouldn’t demonstrate my ability to teach them. And so to both do a diagnostic and attempt to get students involved and engagement with the topic early on at the start of the world religions unit I had period 3 do a carousel for what they knew and wanted to know about the 5 major world religions/belief systems and they beliefs systems influenced and were influenced by the society in which they existed.  Here I show you what the students came up with. I asked them to place their initials next to their comments so I could track who knew what.
