I designed the Freak the Mighty unit plan for my Adolescent Literature course. Because I will be teaching middle school, this content class was the most relevant. I am particularly interested in how young adult literature can be used as a bridge to helping students understand and access classic texts. Freak the Mighty is an excellent example of a text that can be used to prepare students for the themes of disability, friendship, and death in John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men in high school.

The course readings emphasized the importance of young adult literature to adolescents and the need for that literature to be available to them in schools and libraries. The class provided me a long list of titles that I plan to read, recommend to my future students, and possibly teach a few as whole class texts.
