I used the visuals above to teach my students how to make predictions about Of Mice and Men. In Making Content Comprehensible for English Language Learners, Echevarria encourages teachers to use visuals to make content accessible for English Language Learners. My students had to look at the book covers and list their observations. I also gave students several prompting questions: How many people are on the cover? How do they look? What do you think their relationship is to each other? Where are they? Students then used their observations to make a prediction about the novella, using the sentence structure, I predict that Of Mice and Men is about. The predictions that my students generated ranged from simple to complex.
