Each time students participated in a discussion, I reviewed the norms. Because my students were not familiar with class discussions, I thought it was important for my students to understand how to participate in a discussion. In addition, I wanted to create a space in which students felt comfortable sharing their ideas. I modeled each norm and provided examples. For example, I provided students with sentence stems for how to disagree with a classmate without being disrespectful. Referring to the norms at the beginning of each discussion, acknowledging students who followed them, and reminding students of the norms when the discussion got chaotic, I hope that my students began to internalize them and exhibit good discussion behavior not only in my class but in their other classes as well.
