A sample narrative evaluation

At the end of SummerPrep, we sent each student home with a personalized assessment of their performance over the last three weeks. We included a copy of our class photo along with the evaluation. My teaching partner and I co-created these evaluations by collecting and discussing our observations of our students. We began each letter with a paragraph describing some of our key activities at SummerPrep and the focus of our studies over the course of the three weeks. The goal of our evaluations was to give each student specific feedback about their “glows” and “grows”, or the things they did well this summer and the things they can improve in the future. This specificity was very intentional because it showed students that we had taken the time to carefully assess their work and provide direct feedback that reflected our observations. This example student exceeded expectations on her poem. We made certain to explain the criteria for exceeding our expectation (adding additional lines and descriptive words to her poem) so that our student knew exactly what about her work exceeded expectations. My teaching partner and I also made a special effort to ensure that our suggestions for the future were framed in a positive, growth focused light. For this example student, she was an excellent writer but rather quiet during class discussions, even though she often had interesting contributions. We hope that she will speak out more in her next school experience, so we phrased our suggestion in a way that affirmed her potential and encouraged her to extend outward. Writing these evaluations was one of my favorite parts of our summer experience because it was a great chance to reflect on the qualities that made our class unique and exciting. The Daring Dragonflies were a special group and I probably learned as much from them as they did from me this summer. They will always be my first students!
