Take-Home Letter

On the first day of class, we sent the students home with a letter introducing them and their parents to who we were, what the course was about, and our hopes for the summer. In it, we assured family members that they could easily contact us with any questions and concerns. This was a way to acknowledge parents as an integral and important part of the school community and invite them to take part in their children's education.

In the future, I would like to ask students to each write me a letter in return. This would give them an opportunity to introduce themselves to me the way I get to introduce myself to them, and immediately begin to personalize my relationship with each student. In place of or supplemented by a survey, the letters would also give me a sense of students' interests and backgrounds, helping me to tailor the course to the learner.
