Sample Lesson Plan

By the end of student teaching, I had gotten into a groove of writing detailed lesson plans at least two days in advance, giving me time to mull over fine points and get all materials in order. On the day of, I print out a hard copy, which includes a play-by-play, minute-by-minute action plan, which I refer to as I teach to ensure that I stay on time and leave nothing out. Afterwards, I write reflections on each teaching method I used and on the overall lesson itself, noting what worked well, what needed improvement, and what I should do the next day based on what I learned that day.

Above is an example of a lesson plan that I wrote and reflected on. It focused on giving instructions for a lab and guiding students through the pre-lab exercises of describing prior knowledge and formulating a hypothesis. Recognizing the importance of giving crystal-clear instructions, I wrote a detailed step-by-step procedure for my own instruction-giving and adhered to it as I taught, though I made room for flexibility when issues came up, such as questions I had not anticipated. In my final reflections, I made note of what I had done effectively (modeling of procedure and organization, using student examples), as well as some adjustments I would make (labeling my diagram showing a selectively permeable membrane, giving an example hypothesis statement that is totally unrelated to the subject matter to avoid misleading students).
