Letters of Introduction

Before taking over my classes, I wrote a letter to my students introducing myself and my hopes for the semester, and asked them to write me letters in return.

In their letters, students wrote to me about their family and school backgrounds, interests and goals, unique characteristics, thoughts about science, and hopes for the class. They also asked me questions, which I responded to when I handed the letter rubrics back. I found something personal to comment on for each student, which helped me forge warm relationships with everyone and made me more approachable as a teacher. Below are some examples of my written responses to students' letters.
