Final Essays

 

Towards the end of the course, we instructed the students to write an essay for homework synthesizing the knowledge they had accumulated throughout the course to answer the essential question. To help prepare them for the essay, we held a Socratic seminar with the prompt, "Compare and contrast how plants and animals tell time." The essay prompt was essentially the same, and we specified the format, asking for four paragraphs, including an introduction and a conclusion.

Because there were no grades given at BSHS, we assessed the essays through extensive written comments, as shown in the pictures above. We commended students on their strong points and made recommendations for how they could have improved their essays. Given more time in the course, I would have liked to revisit concepts that the essays showed as needing more attention.
