Dan Bisaccio came to visit during a lesson on climate and the carbon cycle. Download his observation notes: obs 1.doc
Taking his suggestions to heart about increasing the number of verbal participants in class, I began "cold-calling" students more often after that lesson, to the point where many more students became accustomed to and comfortable with speaking out in class. Recognizing also that providing a diagram on a handout would be useful for teaching complex systems such as the carbon cycle, in future lessons I designed flowcharts on handouts that students filled out during presentations on photosynthesis and respiration. This increased understanding and retention of the interconnected processes.
