For this lesson, I wanted to be really intentional about making sure students understood that the relationship between Manifest Destiny and U.S. intervention was causal.  So, I opened class by having students respond to a quote that related the two concept (Item A).  Then, I made the day’s objective (Item B) for students to understand that Manifest Destiny led to U.S. intervention and the essential question, what is the relationship between Manifest Destiny and U.S. intervention? (Item C).  This question would be answered in the subsequent lecture I facilitated while students filled out a worksheet that visually connected the two ideas (Item D). Between the entrance ticket that linked the two ideas; the objective and essential question that got students intentionally relating the two ideas; and finally, the graphic organizer that visually reinforced the concept of the causal relationship, this lesson was effective in draw the connection between Manifest Destiny and U.S. intervention for students.
