It was definitely important before talking about the identities of marginalized people to discuss and be comfortable with the identities we held in the classroom.  For this activity students filled in the circles with information about their friends and family, their school, their country, their community and finally, about themselves.  After completing the worksheet, we all did a think-pair-share with a partner about the circle that shapes us the most.  The student whose identity map is posted above shared about education being really important to him, which excited me because at least in my experience I seldom heard other students speak publicly about being passionate about their education, especially on the first day of class.  My co-teacher and I also shared our identity maps which I think was important for students to hear and see and learn about us.
