For the summative assessment, students created writing pieces responding to the prompt: write about the ways that enslaved people resisted internalized oppression. Many students created poems and essays and fewer did the narratives. Students had agency over the format they produced and I scaffolded the assignment pretty well so that they already had examples to draw from. My students enjoyed the assignment and took it pretty seriously and I got the opportunity to see how students were constructing knowledge around how slavery affected those who were enslaved.
