Study guides for exams are a vital part of my pedagogical approach. Not only does it help students to anticipate what will be tested (by the end of the course they are able to write their own study guides based on the state standards) but it also structures the development of study skills. In general, much more learning takes place during the process of completing the study guide then during the actual exam. By helping them predict what is likely to be on the exam it makes studying more targeted and manageable. Once students have completed the study guide, then they make flash cards, test each other, and practice the other skills necessary for success in college.
