During the 2008-2009 school year my students and I became involved with Cityhood for East LA, an incorporation movement for community participation in municipal government. (See the Cityhood tab in "Stern MASS 2008-2009" above, brown.digication.com...) They have continued their involvement by organizing the first ever Youth Board and volunteering for Cityhood.
Most recently, students and their families have been given the opportunity to participate in identifying historical sites in need of preservation. Thanks to Jazmin and the Eastside Heritage Consortium, Persona/Amina Productions, The Maravilla Historical Society, and the Los Angeles Conservancy.
