Overview:

This two-week extended orientation is intended to introduce students to Stern MASS as well as provide them with the opportunity to explore their strengths and challenges in preparation for High School. Students will take the California High School Exit Exam and analyze their own results. Taking ownership of their own test-scores, students will disaggregate their data in order better to understand the state standards and graduation requirements.

Each student will complete a Summer Bridge Portfolio, a culmination of their work. This is their chance to demonstrate their understanding of their current skill levels, establish targets, and formulate concrete plans for achieving their goals. It will also include goals for success in high school, advice from friends and family, a letter to their future selves, and more. (Please see guidelines attached below).

Additionally, students will work with the state-of-the-art Carnegie Mathematics program, a computer-based application which allows teachers to differentiate math instruction. Through both guided and independent practice, students actively engage in problem-solving and move at their own pace.

Lastly, Summer Bridge is about team-building. Through activities designed to build solidarity among the incoming ninth grade class, this intentionally small summer program also focuses on advisory issues of our school's honor code, challenges to graduation, strategies for success in high school, and college admissions.
