These sports organizations also allow for Japanese American youth, many of whom are fourth generation or more, to travel to Japan and play basketball against youth teams in Japan. For example, the main organization that sends a team of boys and a team of girls to Japan from Southern California is the Yonsei Basketball Association. As noted on their website, http://www.yonseiyouth.com/, this organization aims to "provide an opportunity for all participants to experience their heritage and cultural roots." There is a rigorous application process involved with being accepted onto the team, with letters of recommendation, interviews, and an essay all additional components to the physical basketball tryout. All members of the team are housed with Japanese families during their stay in Japan, allowing them to compare and contrast their lives in America to a Japanese family's life.
